About Us
Binghamton Prospect Magazine was originally founded in 2004 on the Binghamton University campus by Gabrielle Carlin and Christine Duggan. Carlin served as the publication's first Editor-in-Chief as she assembled a staff to get the magazine off the ground. The publication was founded to combat the conservative agenda and campus dominance of Binghamton Review, the school's conservative journal publication. In finding a voice and forum to display liberal views of politics and campus issues, Binghamton Prospect received much success in its first few years.

In 2006, the publication hit hard times as all but one club officer of the publication graduated and the magazine almost collapsed. It failed to publish in the fall and if it weren't for the efforts of its lone remaining executive board officer, JR Mabutas, the publication would be completed died. However, after forming friendships with Daniel Levin and Brian Young, the three men re-started the publication, bringing it back bigger and better than ever.

Binghamton Prospect published 4 issues in the spring semester of 2007 with a new color cover look and a redesigned layout. The executive board for the Spring 2007 included:

Editor in Chief: JR Mabutas
Business Director: Dan Levin
Managing Editor: Brian Young
Layout Director: Gil Auslander
Finance Director: Ari Tal
Communications Director: Jennifer Dickey
Web & Graphics Director: Josh Tanzer

The new dedicated and motivated executive board expanded the staff to 25 people and included a humor column, politics, campus life, and student news. The magazine's budget also expanded tremendously due to increased efforts in fundraising, as the magazine published a 2 page color centerfold of pictures in its May 2007 issue covering the "Miss Aphrodite Beauty Pageant."

At the year-end awards banquet dinner held for student organizations, Binghamton Prospect took home 3 trophies included: Best Issue: Student Association elections coverage, Best Educational Event: Layout workshop, and Most Improved publication

In the fall of 2007, Dan Levin took over as Editor in Chief and Jeffrey G. Kagan came on board as the magazine's new Business Director. Binghamton Prospect also expanded its staff as it added a minor board to expand operations to include a new website created by Kevin O'Leary, and a Photography Department directed by Stephanie Alpert. The staff expanded to 40 people as the publication increased from 16 to 24 pages, with each issue containing a color two page centerfold. In the spring of 2008, the magazine would double its circulation numbers from 1,000 to 2,000 copies. The 2007-08 semester also witnessed the publication taking a philosophical shift in position as it became more of a bi-partisan publication for viewpoints, although Prospect was still widely regarded as leftward-leaning.

As the success of Binghamton Prospect Magazine took off, more students on campus began reading the publication and it created a new sense of rivalry with Binghamton Review, appearing in Review's Press Watch on more than one occasion. Still, the rivalry remained friendly as readership for both publications increased. At the spring 2008 awards banquet dinner, Binghamton Prospect increased its awards total from the previous year, this time receiving 4 awards which included: Best Educational Event: journalism writing workshop, Best Program, Most improved, and Most Outstanding Non-executive board member.

As the publication heads into the 2008-09 year, its future has never looked brighter as it continues its expansion and mission of giving a voice to the Binghamton University student body.
